This is my version or erwtensoep. For meat I use a ham hock or piece of smoked bacon. At a pinch you could use smoked sausage.

Ingredients

375g dried green split peas
carrot - about 150g
potato - ideally waxy/vastkokend - about 150g
piece of ham hock - about 150g of meat

Method

  1. If possible wash and then soak the split peas overnight. Alternatively just wash them, though they will take longer to cook
  2. Drain and put them in a large saucepan and cover with plenty of cold water - a good inch or so above peas. Bring to the boil. As it comes to the boil there will be a lot of scum to be skimmed off. Cook for an hour, checking that they are still at least covered by water and then check consistency. If they are not beginning to soften, cook for another 15 minutes and check again.. How long it takes to cook depends on the age go the split peas and whether they were soaked overnight.
  3. When the peas have begun to soften add the potatoes and carrots, peeled and cut into bite size chunks. Add the meat, cut into somewhat smaller pieces. Cook for at least half an hour. You are looking for a thick soup where the carrots and potatoes are soft - maybe even overdone. The peas should be beginning to break down but not to a puree and with no gritty bits. Check seasoning - may need salt unless the meat added was very salty.
  4. This soup will thicken somewhat as it cools. If reheating you may need to add a little water.
